What is the difference between polymer lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion batteries?

1.Raw materials

Polymer battery refers to the use of polymer materials in at least one of the three major components: positive electrode, negative electrode or electrolyte. Polymer means large molecular weight, and its corresponding concept is small molecules, polymer has high strength, high toughness and high elasticity. Polymer battery cathode materials in addition to the use of inorganic compounds for lithium-ion batteries, but also conductive polymer; polymer battery electrolytes are polymer electrolytes (solid or gel state) and organic electrolyte, lithium-ion batteries use electrolyte.

2.Shaping differences

Polymer lithium-ion batteries can be thin, any area and any shape, the reason is that its electrolyte can be solid or gel state rather than liquid, while lithium-ion batteries use electrolyte, to a strong shell as a secondary packaging to accommodate electrolyte. Therefore, this also makes the lithium-ion battery added part of the weight.

3.Safety

The current polymer is mostly soft pack battery, using aluminum-plastic film as the shell, when the internal organic electrolyte, even if the liquid is very hot, it does not explode, because the aluminum-plastic film polymer battery using solid or gel state without leakage, only natural rupture. But anything is not absolute, if the momentary current is high enough, a short circuit, the battery spontaneous combustion or burst is not impossible, cell phones and tablet PC safety accidents are caused by this situation. And lithium iron phosphate batteries have been rigorous safety testing, even in a violent collision will not explode.

4.cell voltage

As polymer batteries use polymer materials, can be made in the cell multi-layer combination to achieve high voltage, and lithium-ion battery cells nominal capacity is 3.6V, to achieve high voltage in practice, it is necessary to connect multiple cells in series to form the ideal high-voltage platform.

5.Conductivity

The ionic conductivity of the solid electrolyte of polymer lithium-ion battery is low. At present, some additives are mainly added to make it a gel electrolyte to improve the conductivity. This also only adds new ionic conductivity, unlike lithium-ion batteries, which maintain a stable value of conductivity without being affected by the quality of auxiliary materials.
